Kuwait's blood bank receives 60,000 donors annually and has been applying the latest donor-blood purification system before such blood is used in patient treatment
, said director of the blood bank Dr Reem al-Radhwan, in press statements on Saturday. The blood bank is the sole tester and purveyor of healthy blood to all government and private hospitals and clinics in the country, she said, noting that one donor's blood is capable of saving the lives of four patients.
There is always an acute need for blood donation, she said, since large numbers of patients with such diseases as Leukemia and those severely injured in car accidents require fresh blood dosages as frequently as every two or three months.
She boasted that Kuwait's blood bank has been given the seal of approval by such well-established organizations as the American blood bank and the WHO, and has been accredited as a Gulf and regional center for training blood bank employees.
Among the first-established blood banks in the Middle East (in 1965), Kuwait's blood bank earned international recognition in 1989 and its blood testing facilities were likewise recognized in 2009, a distinction usually given for two years with the possibility of renewal. - Kuna
