Anti-smoking themes to be introduced to Kuwait''s school curriculums - official

KUWAIT, May 6 (KUNA) -- Anti-smoking themes will be introduced to school curriculums, family Medicine Consultant and Secretary of the permanent committee for the national program for anti-smoking Dr. Hamdiya Al-Fahdli said here Thursday.


Al-Fahdli told KUNA that the program was cooperating with the Ministry of Education to bring awareness amongst the youths of Kuwait by introducing anti-smoking themes into educational subjects.
The national committee had been campaigning against smoking by calling for measures to increase taxes on cigarettes and other smoking material, stated the official, adding that some cooperative societies and supermarkets had either prohibited the selling of such material or posted notifications that smoking might cause cancerous diseases.
Earlier this month, a new campaign was launched under the slogan (Life Is Beautiful Without Smoking), stated the official.
She went on to say that more efforts would be needed to make sure that smoking was a thing from the past, adding that anti-smoking clinics were available at health centers around the country.
Statistics in 2009 showed that around 883 smokers had sought helped to quit smoking with around 324 individuals succeeding in that process. - Kuna
