KUWAIT, May 30 (KUNA) -- Kuwaiti Minister of Public Works and Minister of State for Municipal Affairs Dr. Fadhel Safar Ali Safar sponsored on Sunday the signing of a contract to launch a food testing laboratory.
Speaking to reporters, the minister said the project will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of foodstuffs. "It took time from the Municipality to finalize the preparations for this key project due to the red tape cycle," he said "The cabinet, cognizant of the importance of the project which is part of the country's development plan, approved its early initiation on an exceptional basis," Safat added. The contract was signed by the Municipality's Director-General Ahmad Al-Subaih and a local contracting company. The project, costing KD 7.6 million, will take two years to be built and a third year to complete. It will be built on an area of 15,000 sq. m. in Al-Shuwaikh Area. The lab will specialize in testing imported foodstuffs in collaboration with Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). Meanwhile, Al-Subaih said the Municipality was preparing for two other projects; one to build a new headquarters for the Municipal Council and another to set up the administrative building of the Municipality. "The lab, to be one of the major food testing labs in the Gulf region, will employ the state-of-the-art technologies in this domain," Al-Subaih added. - Kuna
