KUWAIT: The lack of a reserve radar system in Kuwait International Airport's (KIA) control tower could lead to an air disaster in the event of the regular system's breakdown, according to a group of air traffic control personnel.
The Directorate General for Civil Aviation (DGCA) officials have been using an FPS 117 radar system borrowed from the Kuwait Air Force, but warned that this cannot resolve the potential dangers since this system has been specifically designed for military rather than civilian use and does not meet the criteria required for monitoring civil aviation. They warned that continuing to use this system could lead to several potentially catastrophic problems since, for instance, the air force system is unable to detect aircraft above a certain height, meaning that air collisions could take place if planes are flying above this level, reported Al-Qabas. This lack of basic civil aviation safety measures puts Kuwait among the nations which are failing to abide by international standards and r egulations in this regard, the DGCA officials added, warning that this could drive international airlines to avoid including KIA on their flight routes.
