KUWAIT, Aug 8 (KUNA) -- Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs and Minister of Communication Mohammad Al-Busairi said Sunday his ministry has been in contact for several months now with Research In Motion Ltd (RIMM) Company , the owner of BlackBerry Mobile phone, regarding its mobile service for ensuring its compliance with the country's laws and regulations.
Al-Busairi, in a statement to journalists, said his ministry has no intentions whatsoever to ban BlackBerry mobile phone service in the country, noting that the local authorities "are closely monitoring developments with GCC countries regarding this issue, namely the company's bids for providing solutions to various technical, security, and ethical issues regarding the service." The minister also praised cooperation by various local telecom companies in the country regarding the BlackBerry and their implementation of the country's laws and regulations.
Al-Busairi added that under the development plan of the country, the ministry will establish a Public Authority entity for Communication and Information Technology, in this fiscal year, after obtaining legal approval of the relevant authorities.
The United Arab Emirates has recently banned the BlackBerry service. Some other countries followed suit, citing security concerns resulting from the encrypted service. - Kuna
