Demand is increasing for expats working abroad in the Gulf Co operation Council (GCC) countries, reports Emirates Business.
According to a study from the India based Centre for Development Studies (CDS), the rise in demand for workers is mainly due to an increase in construction activity in Saudi Arabia.
Results from a recent survey by recruitment form Manpower suggested that international recruitment in the Asia Pacific area, in particular India, is due to pick up next year to pre recession levels.
S Irudaya Rajan, from the CDS, told Emirates Business that the study had analysed the effect of the global recession on different sectors GDP growth and employment of foreign workers. The study focused mainly on workers from South East Asia but gives an insight into the situation for wider international recruitment in the GCC.
Mr Rajan said: "Except for a 35 per cent fall in numbers from India, the flows in 2009 are comparable to those in 2008. This is especially true in the case of Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal."
The survey also revealed that over 250,000 people from South Asia lost jobs in the Middle East because of the global economic crisis.
There are six countries in the GCC. These are Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Quatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
