DUBAI - Fourteen visitors, including a child, were trapped for an hour in the elevator on the way up to the observation deck of the Burj Khalifa
, the world tallest building, in the first reported technical glitch since the tower’s opening, Gulf News reported on Monday.
The visitors were stuck at a height of around 430 metres on their up to the observation deck, the world’s highest, on the 124th floor, the UAE daily reported.
The elevator can carry a maximum of 14 people and travels at a speed of 10 metres per second. It takes less than 60 seconds for the elevators to travel from the ground floor the 124th floor.
The stalled elevator also caused delayed on the ground for visitors waiting to go up to the observation deck, the newspaper reported.
Emaar Properties, developer of the Burj Khalifa, said the elevator was “briefly stalled and operations were resumed soon after”, according to the paper.
“The safety of our guests is of paramount importance and all elevators in Burj Khalifa are tested and function to the highest safety standards,” a spokesperson was quoted as saying.
The Burj Khalifa officially opened on Jan. 4. The observation deck opened to the public the following day. - Maktoob
