More than 400 Indian detainees have gone on hunger strike at a Saudi deportation centre
on Sunday following the death of a fellow inmate, local daily the Saudi Gazette reported on Tuesday.
Detainees blame authorities over the death of Sheikh Muhammed Saqib, who suffered continual weight loss during his detention that left him resembling a “skeleton”, the newspaper said.
Saqib’s death has brought to light difficulties the Indian embassy is having repatriating nationals held in the Shumaisy Deportation Centre in Riyadh, the paper said.
The Saudi Gazette said embassy officials have been unable to coordinate the repatriation of detainees at the centre, and the issue has reached the point where officials have called on the Indian government to intervene.
