The Iraqi journalist jailed for throwing his shoes at President Bush at a Baghdad press conference has been offered "unconditional shelter" by the Doha Centre for Media Freedom (DCMF), Qatar daily newspaper Gulf Times reported on Thursday. Muntazer al-Zaidi was freed on Tuesday after serving nine months of his sentence in a Baghdad jail and claimed he was tortured by senior Iraqi officials. "We asked him here to show our support for him and other journalists in his situation," DCMF communication manager Anas al-Onazi told the newspaper. Zaidi might arrive in Doha in the next few days, Onazi added. The DCMF had campaigned for Zaidi's release and kept in touch with his family during his time in prison, the newspaper said.
