NEW DELHI, Aug 7 (KUNA) -- The death toll of yesterday's cloudburst in Indian-controlled side of Jammu and Kashmir has reached 132 and more than 500 people were still missing, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported Saturday. Death toll is feared to swell.
A large cloudburst had taken place in J and Ks Leh-Ladkah area leading to flash floods which swept hundreds of houses and caused great loss of human life and property.
As many as 22 dead bodies were recovered on Saturday from slush and debris. Rescue work was still on in the area till the last reports came in, added PTI.
Today, as many as six Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft carrying relief material, rescue workers and doctors landed in Leh to provide required help to the survivors and the injured.
Rescue work is being hampered due to difficult hilly terrains in the region. It is believed that several villages in remote areas were still to be accessed by the relief and rescue teams.
Following the cloudburst, raging flash floods flattened houses, tossed cars and buses leaving behind a trail of death and destruction, said PTI. - Kuna
