KUWAIT, April 14 (KUNA) -- Ministry of Commerce and Industry said here Wednesday that it summoned some officials from carbonated beverages companies to discuss latest price hike as part of its monitoring role in the local market.
Director of the commercial monitoring at the ministry Rashed Al-Hajri told KUNA the ministry officials met with firms' representatives to discuss motives that prompted them to hike prices of their products. Al-Hajri said the ministry requested some detailed bills on their products included in the price hike through different intervals in order to follow up the price development and ascertain the causes of augmentation according to relevant laws. The ministry works to apply laws through transparency and clarity in order to ensure stability in the local market in what brings benefits to both of consumers and producers, he asserted, making clear that his department takes over its responsibilities in such field through its centers spread all over Kuwait. Al-Hajri also stressed that the ministry will not allow the exploitation of consumers through manipulating the prices of commodities and consumer goods or through commercial cheating that harms consumers' health and safety. He also asserted that the ministry would take all legal procedures against whoever proved to be involved in one of such commercial crimes as it did a lot before. Al-Hajri also called on consumers to cooperate with the ministry through reporting any commercial violation in the local market, affirming the consumers' monitoring role is so important in facilitating the monitoring task of the ministry. The local market saw in the past few days a hike in the prices of some carbonated beverages by 50 percent in what urged the ministry to take some legal procedures on this regard. - Kuna
