KUWAIT, July 12 (KUNA) -- The Kuwait Livestock Transport and Trading company (KLTT) on Tuesday said it was not responsible for the rising prices of non-Australian sheep in the local market.
KLTT, a Kuwait-based public shareholding company, noted in a statement to KUNA that it is specialised in importing Australian sheep and its sale at reasonable prices. KLTT, which is engaged in the business of producing, transporting and trading in all kinds of meat within Kuwait and abroad, attributed the hike in prices to the advent of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, noting that "some had exploited" the sacred fasting practice period to profit at the expense of consumers. The large quantity of Australian sheep that the company brings is a basic factor to maintain price balance, KLTT said, noting that the overflowing at the company's sale outlets is due to the high demand at this time of the year and to the relative prices offered. KLTT makes 600 sheep homedelivery a day since demand increased compared to 200 sheep during the ordinary period. The company pledged to continue providing the local market with its needs of meat by increasing its daily export from company farms. At least 3500 sheep are sent daily to government-run slaughter houses since last Thursday, the company said, expecting the number to reach 5000 per day during the last week of Ramadan. - Kuna
