In recent times Kuwait has seen strikes, demonstrations and sit-ins from different work sectors and now the citizens seem to have taken their strike to the fish market but in a different way, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.
The citizens are also urging expatriates to stop eating fish. Under the banner ‘Let the fish rot’ the Kuwaitis are protesting against the soaring prices of fish.
The campaign reminds us of a protest one year ago against the soaring prices of tomatoes. Nearly 120,000 twitters have called on citizens to refrain from buying fish beginning from Oct 15, 2011. The twitters say the fish prices have soared 300 percent.
The twitters have also called upon the authorities to stop the export of Kuwaiti fish and withdraw fish stalls licenses because these have been subleased to the Asians who are manipulating the prices of fish.
Commenting on the campaign, Chairman and Director-General of the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) Jassem Al-Bader said the authority cannot regulate the price of fish. He added the job of PAAAFR is only to control the ways and means of fishing, the locations and dates of the ban, but has nothing to do either with pricing or the export or import of fish.
He indicated it is the role of other bodies such as the Ministry of Commerce, the Municipality and the cooperative societies.
