Deputy Chairman of the Board of Bayan Cooperative Society Emad Al-Barjas cautioned people about a possible price hike of essential commodities. The prices of basic commodities are expected to go up 20 percent this year as against the 15 percent hike in 2011. “The prices of vegetables and fruits will go up, but we find it strange that the government did not make any serious effort to find a solution to this critical issue. He said prices of citrus products such as oranges and lemons as well as apricots, berries and vegetable, being imported through the Syrian borders, are on the rise especially that the borders are expected to close due to the worsening political situation in Syria. He said prices will go up due to the border closure and the fear that the Jordanian products may not be able to meet the demands of Kuwait’s local market or to take advantage of the price situation. He said the price hike phenomenal has become a bitter fact for the citizens and expatriates and there should be a clear mechanism to control prices and monitor them.
