Despite problems generated by delays in producing the giant A380 "Superjumbo,"
European aircraft manufacturer Airbus continues to lead US rival Boeing for new orders this year, Airbus said in figures released Tuesday. Boeing has also been beset with its own problems linked to a two-year production delay for the "787 Dreamliner" and both manufacturers have seen cancellations because of the economic situation. Overall, customers have maintained firm orders for 125 Airbus planes from all categories and Airbus said it delivered 320 aircraft in the first eight months. Boeings orders were some 55 fewer than airbus but it delivered around the same number of aircraft. Both companies reported significant cancellations of orders. The US manufacturer says that it will be ready to test fly the 787 Dreamliner before the end of the year and this could give a boost to orders, which were badly affected because of the production delays at Boeing. An expected economic uptick at the beginning of 2010 could also give a boost to travel again, particularly in the business sector where it has been hard hit because of the financial crisis.
