Although the government spoke many times after Kuwait's liberation 1991 about developing Failaka Island into a touristic hub
, it has yet to be realized. While Failaka can be reached by private boat or yacht, there is also public transportation available to the Island once a day. Additionally there are some private companies that offer transportation to this island. After reaching the Island there are transportation buses taking visitors from the port to the hotel, which is near the zoo and other p laces of interest. On the way, the bus makes a stop at the public beach that includes a few shaded spots.
A visitor to Failaka Island this summer may have noticed a difference at one of the sites there. The public beach in Failaka was suddenly surrounded by a fence and an entrance gate fixed to the middle of it. The visitors were forced to pay KD 3 to enter the beach which had been public only a few months back. The entrance fees included one lunch meal, which in fact was not worth its price.
It's not clear who took the beach and privatized it. The staff working there attracted people with false and misleading information. They claimed to offer a variety of food included with the ticket. They also claimed that entertainment games available at the beach, such as billiards and other games, would be free of charge. Both statements turned out to be false.
The same beach, called 'The Beach of Happiness,' had a bus to bring visitors from the port. These buses took most of the people and denied business to the buses from the Kuwait Public Transportation Company (KPTC). Furthermore, they charged double price (KD 1 instead of 500 Fils). This resulted in less public transportation throughout the summer. Eventually there were no more KPTC busses available.
When the Kuwait Times asked about the KPTC busses, they were told that all were taken back to Kuwait for maintenance. This turned to be a false statement by one of the staff members of the above mentioned beach. The responsible officer for the operation of the KPTC, Osama Al-Zaid, unveiled the reason for removing the busses from Failaka.
We noticed that there was no income from the busses working there. The tickets were the same, and the drivers told us nobody was using the busses. Then we found out the staff of the new beaches were using our busses and transporting their visitors and profiting from it. We suspected that some drivers were corrupt and were taking the money for themselves. The investigation into this issue is still in process at the headquarters of KPTC," noted Al-Zaid. - Kuwait Times
