Jazeera Airways on Monday called for a uniform Gulf air market that could allow Gulf air carriers to freely operate flights from and to all the GCC member countries.
This initiative by Jazeera Airways will put an end to a decade of bilateral agreements among GCC countries and to create a more developed single Gulf air market instead, Jazeera Board Chairman Marwan Boudi said in news remarks. The skies of the GCC members are still controlled by agreements that restrict the freedom of Gulf airlines and freedom of travelers, he said. Some people claim that such restrictions are the only way to manage "our countries' skies", he said. But, he believed that the more developed way to unify the Gulf sky and to bring more freedom to travelers from the different GCC countries is to "establish a single air market". The single Gulf sky, if put in effect, would surely ensure competitive edge and high-quality services, he said, adding that all Gulf airlines, airports and staff would benefit by the expected increase in the number of destinations. Jazeera Airways was established in 2004 and began operations in October 2005. It has a fleet of 10 Airbus 320 planes flying to 23 destinations in the Middle East, North Africa, Iran and India.
