KUWAIT, Jan 4 (KUNA) - The diving team of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society (KEPS) issued on Monday a report on its outstanding achievements in the voluntary activities to protect environment within and outside Kuwait in 2009.
The team was able to recover three boats, including the Monalisa boat which was lifted from the Gulf of Oman, near Hormuz Straits, as part of the project to remove solid waste which are hazardous to marine ecology, head of the team Walid Al-Fadhel told KUNA while unveiling the report. "The team managed to remove 10 tons of such waste from (Kuwait's) Kubbar and Qarooh islands and seven tons off Umm Al-Maradim Island," Al-Fadhel said. "They also found an Iraq cannon and six artillery shells which could lead to a real disaster if they were not properly handled. "While removing the abandoned fishing nets, the team rescued a variety of marine life including a shark, dubbed as the Kubbar Shark, which was spotted at the carol reef of Kubbar Island," he noted. The team has conducted an overhaul of the 70 buoys at the carol reefs of all Kuwaiti islands. "The team has launched Kuwait Tube, a social platform for community members to share audiovisual materials via the internet, which contains up to 6,000 documents. The team has also updated its webpage which is now speaking in many languages. "The Kuwait Tube groups some 30,000 members from around the globe," Al-Fadhel went on to say. "In recognition of its contributions to environment protection, the team has been awarded the 2009 World Environmental Achievement Award of the United Nations (NAUI) in last November," he added. - Kuna
