NA panel rejects tougher penalties for price rises |

KUWAIT: The parliamentary legislative and legal affairs committee yesterday rejected on Monday a proposal to impose tougher penalties on retailers who increase commodity prices.
The committee also refused to specify the commodities to be subsidized, as well as approving a proposal to support national products. Committee chairman MP Hussein Al-Huraiti said in a statement that the committee had turned down a request by the public prosecution to lift the parliamentary immunity of MPs Falah Al-Suwagh, Salem Al-Azmi, Ghanem Al-Mai' and Saad Znaifer. He added that the panel had rejected a proposal to introduce tougher penalties against retailers who increase product prices or to reclassify the act as a felony instead of a misdemeanor. It also rejected specifying certain goods to be subsidized.The committee also approved the establishment of the Food Public Authority, taking legal action against indecent acts in public places and establishing the Food Supervision Authority. It also endorsed a proposal to increase the grants paid to married Kuwaitis studying at Kuwait University and the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training from KD 250 to KD 300, as well as approving the granting of more privileges to Kuwait Airways Corporation staff. - Kuwait times
