KUWAIT, Jan 5 (KUNA) -- Temperature in Kuwait was gradually escalating from 1962-2008 and the winter of 2009-2010 was the cooler of all, Kuwaiti metrologists said on Tuesday.
High temperatures and fluctuating rainfall rates Kuwait was experiencing in the past few years indicate a climate change, Kuwaiti metrologist Essa Ramadhan said. In December 2009, high temperatures were registered for the same month of the years 1962, 1993, 1995 and 1996, he said. Temperature increased by one and a half degrees since 1962, he said, noting that high temperatures on earth overall might account for that due to natural factors and along those created by man. As for rainfalls, they were less by 120 millimeter in the year 1979 up until 2002-2003 and that was when the country was experiencing thunderous rains pouring 30 millimeters per hour or two, he noted. Meanwhile, the highest rainfall rate was registered in 1997 after hitting 65 millimeters, he said. These symptoms indicate to probable "radical" climate changes in the future such as floods, sand movement, sand storms, etc, he said. He called on affiliate bodies to build bigger sewage systems to contain rainfalls over 30 millimeter, planning southwester parts of the country to reduce the effect of dust, transferring plans and factories to industrial areas. Ramadhan added that there was a umber of solutions that might help counter the climate change such as reducing gas emissions responsible for global warming through installing filters to reduce the rate of pollutants in the air, using alternative energy such as the solar and hydro energy alongside wind power. - Kuna
