Revenues of the Kuwait International Airport as of the end of 2009 have been estimated to be KD 18 million, chief of the department of civil aviation Fawaz al-Farah told reporters here on Monday.
He said his department planned to increase the passenger capacity at the airport from seven million to 20 million annually over the next few years. He noted that an Iraqi airline company has asked to operate in Kuwait and that Kuwaiti officials have accepted the request, but he indicated that no date has been set as to when the company would start its flights to and from Kuwait. On the other hand the Kuwaiti airline Jazeera has shown interest in operating flights to Iraq, al-Farah said. As for some of the department's expenditures this year, Abdulhameed Dashti, deputy manager of the department's financial and legal affairs, told KUNA that contracts to the tune of KD 70 million are currently on the books which will go toward streamlining the airport's infrastructure. He added that within the next two years, the department expects to defray at least KD 200 million as the cost of improvements at the airport including updating buildings, fire stations, rescue centers, radar equipment, communication services, and service roads within the airport complex. - Kuna
