Kuwait will mark Friday the fourth anniversary of the demise of Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah who left many achievements in all fields, especially the economic, political, and social
, through a number of initiatives that served Kuwait and the region. Among the initiatives are proposing the establishment of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), the future generations fund, and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS). Dean of the College of Social Sciences at Kuwait University (KU) Dr. Abdulridha Aseeri told KUNA Thursday that talking about late Sheikh Jaber means talking about a major era in the history of Kuwait that involved great challenges and threats. Though his wisdom, Sheikh Jaber was able to protect Kuwait and its national unity during the Iraqi-Iranian war, stress the resistance of Kuwaitis during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, contribute in the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, and speed up the liberation of Iraq later, he said. He pointed out that Al-Sabah's achievements are major positive parts of in the political, military, economic, and social history of Kuwait. Aseeri praised the joint contributions of Sheikh Jaber and His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and called Kuwaitis to learn from the history and challenges that the state went though. Meanwhile, KU's economy lecturer Dr. Riyadh Al-Faras told KUNA that Sheikh Jaber was a man of economy and administration as well as a man of politics. He gave economic issues importance and contributed in developing Kuwait's economy as a whole, and the government sector in particular through the establishment of KFAED and the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK), he said. Sheikh Jaber has a significant role in stressing corporative action and the establishment of many economic corporations that improved the economic status of Kuwait internationally, he pointed out. Sheikh Jaber, through his expertise, ensured the continuation of development although his ruling period witnessed many local and international economic and political crises like the stock exchange crisis in the early 1980s, the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 which destroyed the state's infrastructure and natural resources, the Iraqi-Iranian war, and the fall of oil prices in the mid 1980s, he added. He highlighted that Sheikh Jaber's foreign policy was based on diplomacy which ensured the international support to Kuwait during the Iraqi occupation. - Kuna
