KUWAIT CITY, Jan 15: About 10 female teachers working at a school for the handicapped people recently demonstrated in front of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor
building because they have been reportedly not paid their salaries for the past three months, reports Al-Anba. According to the teachers the school claims the academic year was postponed by a Cabinet decision because of swine flu and the teachers did not work during that period. However, an official at the Ministry referred the teachers to the office of the undersecretary and the latter referred them to the Supreme Council for the Handicapped and the Labor Relations Department to file a complaint. The teachers claim their colleagues working in other handicapped schools have received their salaries. Meanwhile, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Education Mona Al-Logahni submitted a letter to the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Mudhi AbdulAziz Al-Humoud, asking the Ministry to allow the appointment of expatriate, GCC and Bedoun teachers who do not have experience certificates, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily. According to the Assistant Undersecretary, this request comes as a means to tackle the urgent need for teachers across schools in the country and is expected to be implemented immediately after the Minister’s approval.
During a tour of several schools in Ahmadi governorate, Al-Logahni added that students who are unable to sit for a class test must present a medical certificate endorsed by the school clinic along with an acknowledgement letter from the parent or guardian in order to receive an approval for the leave of absence. In another development, the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Mudhi AbdulAziz Al-Humoud informed members of the Organization Committee that there is no objection to cancel, merge or expand some departments in the Ministry, reports Al-Anba daily. The Minister made this statement at a recently held meeting, during which she added that departments are created no to serve personal interests, but rather to achieve objectives that help to develop the educational process. She also warned that any department that does not meet goals and fulfill objectives will be merged with other departments in order to increase productivity and efficiency. - Arab Times
