KUWAIT CITY, Jan 22, (KUNA): A dead mammal washed ashore Friday on the sandy beach adjacent to the Scientific Center Complex in Salmiya and described as a baby whale turned out to be a dolphin.
This was confirmed by the Deputy Director General of the Environment Public Authority (EPA) Ali Haydar who called on citizens making such sightings to contact EPA.
Earlier KUNA contacted the Public Environment Authority (EPA) and informed them about the presence of the mammal on the beach. Beaching of a dead whale is rare occurrence in Kuwait. However, the country has witnessed, on several occasions, huge shark whales drifting and getting stranded in bays and harbors. The nearby Scientific Center hosts a variety of such species.
Globally, some 2,000 marine species, mainly whales, beach themselves annually. Some reach the beaches alive but mostly they die due to dehydration. Activists in some countries come quickly to the aid of this large fish and push them into the sea.Reasons of whales’ beaching are theoretically diverse, including the widespread belief that the phenomenon is related to high pollution. - Arab Times
