KFAS lists winners of its annual prizes

KUWAIT, Feb 13 (KUNA) -- Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) announced on Saturday the list of the winners of its Kuwait Prize 2009 , for distinguished accomplishments in the arts, humanities and sciences, along with other prizes it annually awards to researchers.
Prizes to Arab citizens were awarded over three categories instead of five, Director General of KFAS, Dr. Ali Al-Shamlan said in a press statement. In addition, Kuwaitis were exempt from the awards, which usually include local researchers.
The Basic Sciences prize in physics was awarded to Prof. Majed Sharqy (Algeria), Applied Sciences in cancerous diseases to Dr. Wafiq Al-Deery (Egypt) and Arabic and Islamic Scientific Heritage in planning and city demographics to Dr. Fouad Sayyed (Egypt).
In context, Dr. Al-Shamlan listed winners of KFAS' other competitions including the 2009 Scientific Production Prize, the 34th Kuwait Book Fair Prize, the 2008 Best Research Prize and the Agriculture, Animal and Fish Resources Prize.
The Scientific Production Prize consists of three categories with two researchers each; firstly: natural sciences, mathematics and engineering sciences, secondly: social sciences, humanities, economic and management sciences and thirdly: bio-sciences and medical sciences.
The award for the first category went to Dr. Jassim Mohammad Al-Awadhi for the natural sciences and mathematics prize, while Dr, Taher Al-Sahhaf was awarded the prize for engineering sciences.
The second category, was awarded to Dr. Issa Al-Ansari in social sciences and humanities, while the economic and management sciences award went to Dr. Helayyel Al-Mutairi.
The third category was awarded to both Dr. Yousif Al-Shayji in biological sciences and Dr. Abdulmajid Zubaid in medical sciences.
The Kuwait Book Fair Prize of three categories went to Dr Yacoub Al-Hajji for best book on Kuwait, Dr. Abdulelah bin Ibrahim Al-Muhaidib for best book translated into Arabic and Professor Amal Al-Ghanim for best children's book.
The 2008 Best Research Prize in humanities went to Dr. Salwa Jawhar and sciences for Maha Al-Shemmeri and Mansour Al-Raghaib.
The Agriculture, Animal and Fish Resources Prize went to Faisal Al-Dammak, Rashid Al-Mutairi, Mishal Al-Marzouq, Hussain Al-Mubarak and Mohammad Al-Ateeqi, Dr. Al-Shamlan concluded. - Kuna
