KUWAIT: Construction work, road cleaning, maintenance and repair work are among occupational jobs that needed protection gear while tasks are being performed.
But many workers engaged in these tasks can be seen all over Kuwait without using proper protection, and insufficient gear. The new law broadens its scope to better protect workers. Under the law, anybody working or even visiting construction facilities are required to wear a helmet to protect their heads . No, we are not given helmets. It doesn't matter to us. If it happens, it happens. Otherwise, we consider it an unfortunate accident," said Bader, an Egyptian construction worker who spoke to Kuwait Times. "I have been doing this job for years and I never wear a helmet because I don't feel comfortable wearing it," he added. Chapter four, Section four, Article 83 of the new labor law states: "The employer shall take all the safety measures to protect workers, machines and materials used the establishment and occasional visitors against work risk." It goes on to state, "The employer shall further provide safety and occupational health aids required for this purpose and stipulated in the resolution issued by the competent minister after considering the opinion, of competent authorities. Haroon, a Bangladeshi cleaner wears a green uniform while trimming bushes. He cannot be easily spotted by motorists on the road as the uniform is camouflaged by trees. "We wear whatever uniforms they give us. We have no choice. We have been asked to take care of the cars anyway," he commented. In addition, the law stipulates that employers should bear the cost of the safety tools and equipments required for the job. Furthermore, the employer should clarify about the nature of the risks involved. Inadequate explanations provided, and failure to supply proper safety gears (for the job) are unacceptable excuses under the new law. - Kuwait Times
