KUWAIT, April 11 (KUNA) -- Kuwait Supreme Council for Disabled People's Affairs said here Sunday new mechanisms were now being put in place to protect the rights of the disabled.
Through such fresh mechanisms, medical committees will accurately diagnose all cases seeking disability certificates, the council's medical body chief, Rashid al-Emeri, told KUNA. They will also monitor and report the development of disability cases, and carry out periodical assessment for disabled people, he said. The newly passed law on the disabled is also mainly intended to safeguard the rights of disabled people given that it conforms to the global development of the concept of disability, he added. Al-Emeri commended the new law as a quantum leap in terms of a modernized state's commitment towards the fulfillment of disabled people's civil and political rights in parallel with other ordinary people. As per the current orientation of modernized countries, which are in harmony with modern definitions and classifications of disability at the World Health Organization (WHO), a special attention is attached to the favorable aspects of disabled people with a view to boosting their capabilities and including them in the society, he noted. The modernized world pays an increasing attention to special education services and programs for the disabled in order to enable them to get engaged in societal activities, he pointed out. There are over 33,000 disabled people in Kuwait, he said, citing recent statistics by the Supreme Council for Disabled People's Affairs. - Kuna
