KUAWIT, April 17 (KUNA) -- The migration of birds from Kuwait towards the north during spring of 2010 was delayed due to weather and other environmental factors
, said Chairman of the Ornithological Society of Kuwait Abdulrahman Al-Sarhan on Saturday. He told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that those birds pass by Kuwait during its annual migration season, heading to its breeding locations in the north. He added that the large number and variety of birds migrate during the spring season depending on many factors, such as the availability of food, including grass and insects, and to weather conditions like frequent rain and mild weather. The direction of the wind plays a very important role in the migration of birds, he said, adding that mild southern winds were perfect for propelling birds migrating towards the north, while the strong northern winds could prevent them from flying towards their new places, Al-Sarhan said. Small birds normally travel during the night, because of the cool weather and decrease in wind speed, flying at the altitude of 100 to 500 meters, he noted. He said that hovercraft birds - bigger birds - travel during the day, making use of the hot rising winds, because the hot winds were lighter than cold ones. The sudden change in the weather during the night, like heavy rain and strong storms, force birds to land on the ground and wait until the weather improves, which results in an increase in the number and variety of birds in Kuwait year after year. - Kuna
