KUWAIT: Municipal officials held a workshop on Tuesday during which they reviewed the Korean experience in railway construction and designing
as part of their planning efforts for the planned GCC network. Saad Al-Muhailbi, the head of the Kuwaiti Municipality's department of structural planning, said in a statement that according to the plans, the regional network will links Kuwait City with Al-Dammam in Saudi Arabia, the Bahraini capital Manama, the Qatari capital Doha, the UAE capital Abu Dhabi and the Omani capital Muscat. This regional project will require highly-equipped trains for the transportation of passengers and cargo, he said. Al-Muhailbi revealed that the projected cost for the GCC railway venture is estimated at $11 billion, with Kuwait contributing $880 million of that sum. The senior official further explained that a public shareholding company will be founded by a cabinet decision, with half of its shares to be floated for public subscription and the remaining 50 percent to be made available to private sector firms and the government. The domestic railway project will be executed in phases, Al-Muhailbi revealed, linking Kuwait City with Nuwaiseeb, Abdali, the airport, Shuaiba and the Boubyan ports. - Kuwait Times
