DAMASCUS, June 8 (KUNA) -- Kuwait was keen on signing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and related protocols, said a Kuwaiti official here. Speaking to KUNA
, head of the Kuwaiti Interior Ministry's department for following up National Assembly Affairs Lieutenant Colonel Bandar Al-Mutairi, who is representing his country at the first Interpol International Conference on Combating Human Trafficking, said that Kuwait realized the national, regional, and international danger of human trafficking. Therefore, it prepared a national law on combating human trafficking and the smuggling of immigrants, he pointed out. He noted that the draft law discusses the definition of human trafficking and immigrant smuggling, and states that people who commit those crimes should be harshly punished. Punishments could reach life imprisonment, he added. The draft law also stresses the rights of the victims of those crimes, he said. Al-Mutairi pointed out that combating human trafficking, especially that targeting women and children, is one of the major challenges that face societies.
