KUWAIT, June 14 (KUNA) -- Fifteen firefighters, a woman and two children were injured as a result of a fire at multi-storey Sawaber residential complex, downtown Kuwait City, on Monday, Kuwait Fire Services Directorate (KFSD) said.
Firefighters from Al-Hilali, the Capital City and Al-Salmiya fire stations, backed by rescuers and technical backup teams, fought tooth and nail to control the fire, which broke out at a seven-storey building of the complex, and prevent its spread to nearby buildings, said Director of KFSD's Public Relations and Information Division Lt. Col. Khalil Al-Amir. "Five of the wounded firefighters were rushed to hospital while the other ten received first-aid at the site," Lt.-Col. Al-Amir told reporters here. Affirming that the fire was put out, he said: "The KFSD has put its organs on the alert for any eventuality in this summer and reviews its plans constantly to ensure preparedness for the very hot season." Lt. Col. Al-Amir urged provision of fire detectors at all buildings and raising awareness of all citizens, residents and housemaids about the safety regulations. Meanwhile, Director of the Health Ministry's Medical Emergency Division Dr. Faisal Al-Ghanem said eight ambulances and an 18-member medical team rushed to the site upon receiving information about the fire. "The team brought into force the emergency plan which helped tackle the accident properly," Dr. Al-Ghanem pointed out. The emergency surgical ward of the Amiri Hospital was alerted and liaison officer was urgently appointed to coordinate contacts between the hospital and the medical team at the site as per the emergency plan, he added. - Kuna
