KUWAIT: The Ministry of Communications is espousing a strategic vision within the state's development plan to privatize public sectors, Minister of Communications Dr Mohammad Al-Busairi said yesterday.
"The vision includes the establishment of an authority to regulate communications and information technology," Al-Busairi, also Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs, said in a press release. His remarks came on the sidelines of a ceremony celebrating head of the Directorate General of Civil Avaition (DGCA) Fawaz Al-Farah, who was granted honorary chairman for Kuwaiti tourism and travel agents' union. "The ministry has forwarded the KD 4.5billion railway project to the major projects' committee in order to attract bids for studies and consultations," the minister noted. On his part, Al-Farah said the aviation sector plays a major role in pushing national economy forward, as its revenues surpass KD 500 million a year. "The open skies policy, adopted by the Kuwaiti government since 2006, had significantly contributed to the growth of aviation movement from and to the country, with eight million passengers travelling to 79 destinations operated by 45 international carriers via Kuwait International Airport in 2009," Al-Farah pointed out. With 329 travel agents across Kuwait, choices for potential travelers are comfortably available, he said, adding that Kuwait International Airport is in the process of opening seven new terminals, so as to ease load on other gates. "This would be backed with an online boarding system," he concluded. - Kuwait Times
