KUWAIT, June 21 (KUNA) -- After days of humid weather, Kuwait entered Monday a season characterized by sandstorms caused by northwestern winds, Kuwaiti meteorologist Issa Ramadhan said.
The country will be witnessing dry dust storms at speeds of 20-45 km/h till the end of the week, Ramadhan said, adding that high humidity in the upper atmosphere resulted in forming clouds which led to light showers in Jahra area, southern parts of the country, and eastern parts of Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, temperature will be at 43-48 degrees, he said. He added that due to the fact that sun rays will be falling almost on a right angle, days will be 4 hours longer than nights. As for media reports saying temperatures reached 80 degrees, Ramadhan said that this was false, and noted that the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) set specific criteria for temperature sensors worldwide. Temperature is measured in the shade, and temperature in the sun could not be measured accurately due to the many factors at play. The highest temperature registered ever was 57.8 percent in Libya seen September 13, 1929, he said. As for Kuwait, the record temperature was 51.3 degrees, seen August 20, 1998. June saw new record temperature of 52 degrees in Kuwait city, while it was 54 degrees in Mtarba area in the northwest, and temperature at Kuwait International Airport remained in the range of 51 degrees. - Kuna
