KUWAIT: Abbasiya, a part of the Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh area, is mostly inhabited by expatriates, especially those from Asian countries. This areas is suffering from many problems including power cuts, water shortages and crimes.
With the recent high temperatures, residents of the area have suffered through programmed and repeated power outages, which has made their lives difficult. Residents of the area, specifically the Indian community in Abbasiya, formed an Action Committee last Sunday to solve the problem. We held a meeting and called the Indian Embassy in Kuwait and spoke to the ambassador regarding our issue," Somu Mathew, a coordinator of the Indian community in Abbasiya, told the Kuwait Times. "The ambassador then contacted the Ministry of Electricity and Water to solve the problem. The situation today is much better and only a few parts of Abbasiya witness power shortages. According to Mathew, the ministry installed three new transformers in the area. "People are satisfied now and I hope that by today even the last few cuttings of power will be corrected. If problems continue we will meet again on Saturday and discuss the problem. We will also try to meet with the MP of Jeleeb Al-Shuyoukh to discuss the problem with him," he added. The Action Committee consists of 20 local residents from different parts of Abbasiya. "The Committee was formed to deal with the public authorities in Kuwait, the ambassador, and others," he said. "We also have good contacts with the ministers in India, who can influence the Indian Embassy here and the local authorities. While the main reason behind the committee's creation was to address the electricity problem, the committee has also dealt with other problems. "We will also meet with MP Saud Al-Mutairi to discuss further problems in this area, such as the water shortage, bad smells and others," explained Mathew. "We don't intend to hold any protests or demonstrations," he said. "At most we would only sign petitions expressing our demands. - Kuwait Times
