Public sector wages rise by 22% annually |

KUWAIT: Newly released statistics show that Kuwaiti public sector workers' pay has been increasing by an annual average of 22 percent per year over the past ten years
, with civil servants' salaries rising by an average of 11 percent to a total of KD 3.38 billion between the 2008-09 and 2009-10 financial years alone. The increases follow the trend seen over the past ten years, during which public sector employees' salaries have seen massive increases, in parallel with the country record budget surpluses, which have totaled KD 38 billion in the past decade. Between the 2000-01 financial year and the 2008-09 fiscal year, the public sector budget trebled, while salaries rose by a total of 219 percent, an average of 22 percent annually. The newly released statistics also indicate that total public spending levels have risen by 360 percent over the past ten years, increasing by an annual average of 36 percent, reported Al-Qabas. While the total spending for the 2000-01 financial year stood at 3.18 billion, this had increased by 2009-10 to KD 11.8 billion. - Kuwait Times
