KUWAIT: More than a third of those surveyed across the Middle East and North Africa said that their management is more likely to hire fresh graduates after the recession.
The survey was the latest online poll conducted by the Middle East's number one job site, Bayt.com. The results of the 'Fresh Grads in the ME Workforce 2010/2011' poll showed that 37.6% of respondents believed their management was more likely to hire fresh graduates since the recession while 26.4 said they were less and 19.2% said things remained unchanged. When asked which percentage of the workplace represents fresh graduates, 27.7% of respondents said up to 10%, 14.6% said between 10 - 20%, 12.4% said between 20 - 30%, 9.7% said between 30 - 50%, 18.2% said more than 50% and another 17.4% reported that they had no current fresh graduates in their office right now.
The polls went on to ask the region's respondents how many fresh graduates on average their companies had recruited in the past 12 months. Over half of those polled, 56.3%, said only 0 to 5%, 16.8% said 5 to 10% and 27% said more than 10%. When participants were asked what departments are likely to employ the largest share of fresh grads, 27.1% said marketing, 20.2% finance and accounting, 18.4% IT, 15.2% human resources and administration, 4.7% creative development and 14.5% said other departments. Those who participated in the survey were asked what they thought the number one motivation for employers was to hire fresh graduates. More than half, 51.7%, said less salary and benefits, 12.7% said more passion and desire, 10.4% said ambition a nd creativity, 8.5% said more self motivation and initiative, 8.4% indicated fresh analytical thinking while 5.1% indicated communication skills. As the number one job site in the Middle East, Bayt.com is dedicated to researching and analyzing data that can be useful to both employees and employers," said Amer Zureikat, Bayt.com's VP of Sales. "The results of our most recent poll shows that in times of economic strife employers are more likely to hire fresh graduates because of the fact that they accept a lower salary and require fewer benefits." Most of the respondents, 49.2%, said their companies provided mentorship programs and proper training for fresh beginners once recruited while 39.6% said their companies did not. When asked what most of the fresh graduates were currently looking for, the vast majority, 76.5%, replied employment. A few respondents, 9.7%, indicated that fresh graduates were looking for internship opportunities, a small minority, 6.4%, said further education while 6% replied setting up their own businesses. - Kuwait Times
