KUWAIT: Ayedh Al-Sehaly, Head of the Society asked teachers to gather outside the Ministry of Education's headquarters in protest against a decision to extend class hours by 25 minutes every Tuesdays.
When questioned about fulfilling responsibilities in schools, Al-Sehaly reportedly urged teachers to take part, even if it meant that sick leaves are taken. Meanwhile, Education Minister Dr Moudhi Al-Homoud criticized the calls for protest, stating that what is actually being done is to add an additional period every Tuesday which students can utilize to pursue constructive activities, reported Al-Qabas. While agreeing that the freedom of expression is protected by the Constitution, the minister asserted that this should not conflict with rules and regulations, nor should it disrupt public functioning, "It's against Kuwait's interest, for our young generation, to be educated about flouting laws in favor of expression of opinions," Dr Al-Homoud added. "Whoever wants to express their opinion, can do so at anytime, but not during working hours. Meanwhile, it is believed that deteriorating situation is being aggravated by political movements supervised by the Islamic Constitutional Movement (ICM), against the education minister. - Kuwait Times
