KUWAIT, Oct 23 (KUNA) -- Terrorism is a phenomenon that attracted the attention of various world peoples and governments as it became a serious threat to world peace and security
, director of media security department at the Ministry of Interior Brig. Mohammad Hashem Al-Sabr said here Saturday. He pointed out ahead of his departure to Cairo to attend a symposium on "The use of Internet in financing terror and recruiting terrorists" (Oct 25- Oct 27) that the term of e-terrorism appeared following the big developments made in the field of internet and recruiting terrorists through information technology with the help of computers. He added that e-terrorism means carrying out illegal attacks or threatening of launching attacks against computers, electronic networks or the electronically stored data in order to take revenge or blackmail governments, peoples or the international community as a whole to reach given political, religious or social targets. Al-Sabr added that e-terrorism depends on the use of scientific and technological potentials and makes use of communications systems and computer networks to intimidate people, inflict harm upon them or threaten them. He also noted that this matter motivated many countries to sign the Budapest Convention on Cyber Crimes in 2001. Al-Sabr concluded by saying that terrorism and internet are now related through two ways: the first is carrying out acts of vandalism against the Web in general and computer networks in particular, and the second is the use of internet as a platform by extremist groups and individuals for spreading the messages of hatred, violence and sabotage. - Kuna
