KUWAIT: Kuwaiti formative artist Abdullah Al-Zaid yesterday called for the establishment of museums and art galleries in Kuwait to showcase the work of the country's formative artists past
, present and future. Al-Zaid said that at present, due to the small number of galleries and other suitable public spaces, Kuwaiti formative artists can't publicly exhibit their paintings for more than one week. The country's art bodies, such as the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) and the Kuwait Society for Formative Arts (KSFA) have only limited space in which to showcase artists' work, he went on, adding that the weak support for formative artists from Kuwait's public and private sectors has seen a steady decline in the number of artists working in the country. This compares poorly with countries such as the UAE, which offer tremendous support to the formative arts, hosting a large number of galleries, as well as regular auctions of Islamic antiquities, said Al-Zaid. Formative art is practiced in Kuwait as a pastime, with very few professional artists working in the field full-time as in European countries, noted the artist, who has participated in numerous regional and international exhibitions over the past 12 years, exhbiting his work in locations as diverse as Tunisia, Berlin, Bahrain and Russia. Al-Zaid, who won the Khalifa Al-Qattan creativity prize in 2008, also held solo exhibitions of his work in January, August and September of last year. - KUNA
