KUWAIT: Registration at Kuwait University for the 2011-12 academic year will open on Sunday June 26 and end on July 27, a senior university official announced on Monday.
Speaking at a press conference held to announce the upcoming registration period, Dr Muthanna Al-Refaie, the Dean of KU's Registration and Admission division, said that high school graduates wishing to enroll for courses would need to have obtained a minimum level in their school diplomas of 70 percent overall in science subjects and 78 percent in Arts subjects to be eligible for places at the university. He added that these criteria are applicable to both Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti students with Kuwaiti mothers, although bedoon (stateless) applicants are not eligible. Dr Al-Refaie indicated that school-leavers can register for undergraduate places online for the first semester, although all other applications must be submitted in person. Meanwhile, MP Dr Faisal Al-Mislem has become the latest figure to condemn the Ministry of Higher Education's recent decision to limit the annual number of new students accepted by Kuwait University to 6,850, a reduction on the maximum number of new students accepted in previous years, which was regularly over 7,000. Calling the ministry's decision "unjust," Dr Al-Mislem said in a press release issued on Monday that his Reform and Development Bloc (RDB) would hold education minister Ahmad Al-Mulaifi wholly responsible for "depriving citizens of their right to higher education.
