KUWAIT: Commerce and Industry Minister Amani Buresli has vowed that the ministry will not turn a blind eye to any unwarranted and unauthorized increases in the prices of basic commodities.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is keen to develop its inspection teams' performance and the strategies used, and is currently discussing possible methods for tightening its scrutiny of the market to protect consumers, she asserted. Addressing a ministry meeting yesterday, Buresli said the ministry is keen to resolve issues impeding the ministry departments' and inspection teams' satisfactory performance of their duties, especially since these are directly involved with protecting consumers' rights and health. The cooperation of consumers themselves and the introduction of precautionary measures such as monitoring and logging prices ahead of periods of high demand are particularly important ahead the month of Ramadan and the start of the school year, she indicated. The main areas of attention in the process of development should be upgrading technical standards and capabilities, improving administrative coordination and performance, and bolstering cooperation with other state authorities, said Buresli. The officials at the meeting also discussed and stressed the need to constantly review and where necessary amend laws to fit the prevailing conditions and to close loopholes in existing regulations, both locally and globally. The meeting was attended by a number of senior Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI) officials, as well as departmental and inspection team heads from all Kuwait's governorates. - KUNA
