KUWAIT CITY, Sept 19: Acting Undersecretary for Nationality and Passports Affairs at the Ministry of Interior, Major-General Abdullah Al-Rashed
, has issued a circular to all immigration departments in the six governorates to complete formalities of residence permits for expatriates who have amended their legal status and obtained work permits from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, reports Al-Anba daily.
The instructions say expatriates who have paid the fines for staying illegally in the country and obtained work permits from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor before the end of the amnesty period can now apply for residence permits without legal problems.
According to the instructions Kuwaitis have the right to resort to court in case of violation of residence law by their domestic workers. He said the court will decide whether to cancel or reduce the amount of fine provided the sponsors prove the violation (illegal stay) was not deliberate. - Arab Times
