A committee formed by Interior Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Humoud to study the cases of expatriates
, who are up for deportation, has agreed on the need to repatriate those who have been detained at the Deportation Center for a long time due to failure to pay their debts, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting sources.
Sources confirmed the panel met for the first time on Sunday and it recommended the abovementioned step as a humanitarian gesture, provided the beneficiaries are involved in simple financial cases. Sources explained the panel thinks it is better to push for an amicable settlement between these expatriates and various institutions in the country, because their prolonged detention costs much more than the debts they have to pay. Sources said the committee has contacted the respective embassies of these expatriates for the processing of their travel documents.
Sources added the committee has been instructed to submit a separate report for each case to identify the legal position and the appropriate measures. Sources clarified the committee has the right to seek the assistance of any authority that can help achieve its goals.
It can be recalled that a number of inmates at the Deportation Center threatened to commit suicide en masse in protest of their miserable condition last August. Sources said the securitymen assigned in the center had to seek the assistance of the Special Forces to control the situation. - Arabtimes
