The cost of bringing Filipino domestic workers to Kuwait has increased from KD 400 to KD 750 following Philippines’ decision to hike the fees in light of the high demand of its personnel
, particularly after the suspension on Indonesian workers, Al-Seyassah daily quoted Board Chairman of Union of Domestic Personnel Companies Fadhel Ashkanani as saying.
He denied reports that the union was responsible for the hike, but admitted that some manpower supplying companies manipulate the issue. “A number of Kuwaitis rent their company licenses to expatriates for a sum of KD 300 monthly. The expatriates thus get an opportunity to commit several malpractices which affect the reputation of Kuwait,” he said.
There are roughly 650,000 domestic personnel in the country, which means Kuwait attracts the largest number of domestic workers all over the world, he said.
Referring to the suicides of domestic workers, Ashkinani said about 20 such cases are reported every year and “it is not such a big number.” He added that maids lead a luxurious life in Kuwait, particularly since there is more than one maid in each house. “Also, Asian maids prefer Kuwait over other GCC countries even if the wages are less.”
He said the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor failed the domestic workers by excluding the rights of this group in the new labor law.
