Around 50 Indians were detained for a few hours for allegedly bursting crackers to celebrate the Indian festival of Diwali in Salmiya Wednesday.
The detained were reportedly taken to Rumaithiya police station and were apparently released later in day. According to eyewitness accounts the police had given permission to revelers to burst crackers from 7 to 9 in the evening, and those who violated this time limit were arrested.
People who celebrated Diwali on the Mirch Masala Ground spoke highly of the policemen, ‘who treated the revelers respectfully, allowing us to celebrate till 9 pm and then requesting us to wind up when the deadline approached.’
One of the restaurant was also asked to close at 9:45 pm.
The arrests were allegedly made near the famous Edee Bakala and the Titanic Building, where some young boys were bursting crackers after 9 pm. The Indian Embassy has not issued any official statement on the incident.
Last year, similar celebrations had raked up a storm with widespread arrests and alleged manhandling of revelers by policemen.
