Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Mohammad Al-Afasi intends to secure the passage of the public labor authority bill after two or three parliamentary sessions.
The minister made this announcement in the celebration of the Seventh National Day for Solidarity with the Disabled, which he attended recently on behalf of HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Al-Afasi confirmed the draft bill has been completed and the organizational structure of the authority has been approved. He explained the authority will work based on a certain vision to handle the affairs of expatriate workers and monitor their contracts to ensure they are in line with the actual needs of the local labor market. He confirmed the protesters had previously met some Cabinet officials and they have agreed on referring their demands to the Civil Service Commission (CSC). “I forwarded their request to the CSC, since it is in charge of evaluating and approving pay raise demands. The commission will then submit its recommendations to the Cabinet for approval,” he added.
Asked about ways to stop the protest actions, Al-Afasi pointed out the legal workers have all the right to fight for their privileges but they should do it through peaceful dialogue and meetings with the concerned officials in order to protect the interests of others.
On the approval of the proposed pay raise for the Social Care Home staff, Al-Afasi clarified the ministry prioritized this issue to encourage more citizens to work in this field.
