The number of detainees at the Deportation Center has decline from 1,000 to nearly 350, thanks to the initiative of Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior Sheikh Ahmad Al-Humoud
who had formed a committee to re-study the files of all detainees, reports Al-Rai daily.
Director General of Public Authority for Penitentiary Institutions and Jails Major General Khalid Al-Daeen said the minister gave the instructions after he was told that several people were victims of legal mistakes and violations.
Stressing that the minister prioritizes people’s freedom, Al-Daeen said according to Articles 18 and 20, the Interior Ministry can detain violators for only one month. “Any period over this is considered a violation of law, while Article 20 of Foreigners Law necessitates the referring of people without valid residence to investigation department.”
He added that the committee managed to take positive steps to end the suffering of several detainees by expediting procedures related to their deportation. The committee also released detainees who had Kuwaiti relatives or had relatives in the military on bail to help them re-unite with their families. “These included only those who were not a threat to public security and were born in Kuwait,” he added.
Al-Daeen said an office for judge has been set up inside the jail to simplify the process of extending the detention period.
