A big section of the First Ring Road which connects the Riyadh Highway with Ali Al-Salem Street near the Palace of Justice was re-opened for traffic, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
The director of the Highways Administration at the Ministry of Public Works Abdulaziz Al-Sabah said Sunday the First Ring Road section, which is now operational, from Dasman Palace to the Palace of Justice has three lanes in each direction without any traffic lights or crossroads. He added the opening of this section will wipe out most traffic jams which used to plague the area especially after the opening of the bridge that leads to Jamal Abdulnasser Road directly without having to pass by the Sheraton Roundabout. “Motorists who want to go to the roundabout now have to use the Al-Sour Street which is parallel to the First Ring Road, or use the Al-Jahra Street from the opposite direction,” added Al-Sabah. “Other sections of the road will be opened during the next two weeks, and the full operation of the road will be by next March,” he added. The project manager, Mohammad Al-Abady, said Sunday the main tunnel, which will extend three kilometers in both directions will start from the southern part of the First Ring Road up to Ali Al-Salem Street opposite the Justice Palace. “Two other tunnels will soon be opened: tunnel number 2 that connects Jamal Abdulnasser Road with the First Ring Road, and tunnel number 3 that connects the First Ring Road’s northern part with Jamal Abdulnasser Road,” explained Al-Abady.
