The death toll from Typhoon Morakot-triggered landslides and flooding in southern Taiwan reached 461 and 46 others were injured, China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Wednesday.
Some 192 people remain missing after Morakot, the worst typhoon in Taiwan in 50 years, devastated the island on August 6-9, Xinhua said. The typhoon also brought about a NTD 14.5 billion (USD 440 million) financial losses for agricultural, forestry, fishing, and herding sectors, the report added. According to the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry, at least 81 countries from around the world, the European Union, and 21 international organizations had donated a total of NTD 160 million (USD 4.9 million) in relief aid to the island.
