Minister of Public Works and Minister of State for Municipal Affairs Fadhel Safar said here Saturday the situation at overflowing sewage water stations was still under control.
A joint governmental working team has been formed of the fire squad and civil defense authority and several other bodies concerned in order to contain the problem, the minister told a news conference. A wastewater recycling plant in Mishref had malfunctioned, flooding the station and causing it to fill with poisonous gas. The problem occurred with the last three pumps at the station having broken down. Ten other pumps ran out of service for some time. A blueprint set out by the Ministry of Public Works to stop potential outflow at the areas served by the station in Hawalli Governorate is now working out, the minister said. Wastewater has been taken into rainwater drains through the distribution of over 100 biologically and chemically treated pumps, he added. The minister noted that a fresh experiment was in full swing to stop the leakage of water into the station and to empty it out of water as a prelude to checking what the problem was there. The troubled 30-meter-deep plant has three levels and includes 13 pumps.
